Learn to DJ With Confidence — and Actually Get Behind the Decks

8 weeks of 1:1 DJ mentorship in Adelaide — working directly with active professional DJs to build a performance-ready set and the confidence to use it.

What Is DJ Lab?

DJ Lab is one of three streams inside AAI's signature 8-week mentorship program, Launch Lab.

Your Goal

Complete your Launch Lab Project (LLP) — a fully organised, performance-ready Rekordbox set — curated, mapped, branded, and ready to perform.

▶

Every Skill Has a Purpose

Everything you learn connects directly to your set. You always know why you are learning what you are learning.

♫

Progress You Can Perform

Unlike tutorials that go nowhere, every single session moves your set forward. Progress is visible and audible every week.

◎

Built for Real Beginners

Especially effective for people who have dabbled at home but never felt ready to take it further — or who want to get behind the decks but don't know where to start.

What You'll Learn

Across 8 weeks of weekly 1:1 sessions you'll develop a genuine foundation in DJing — not just technical skills, but the creative and performance confidence to actually use them.

♩

Beat Matching

The foundation of DJing, taught on both software and hardware so you understand what you're hearing, not just what you're seeing on screen.

≋

Track Structure and Phrasing

How music is built in sections, and how to use that knowledge to make transitions feel natural and intentional.

♫

Harmonic Mixing

Mixing in key using Rekordbox's key display so your sets flow musically as well as rhythmically.

◈

Advanced Mixing Techniques

Loops, hot cues, effects, and filters. The tools that take you from functional to creative.

▶

CDJ Proficiency

Hands-on training on our club-standard Pioneer XDJ-XZ so you feel genuinely comfortable walking into any venue setup.

∞

Set Curation and Flow

How to build a set that takes listeners on a journey. Energy arc, track selection, reading the room, and adapting on the fly.

⌁

Rekordbox Organisation

BPM mapping, key tagging, mood and purpose tagging, and playlist structure so your library works for you under pressure.

⊙

Recording Your Set

How to capture a mix for promotional use, booking enquiries, and documenting your progress.

◎

DJ Identity and Branding

Your DJ name, bio, social presence, and how to approach venues professionally. Because being a DJ is more than just playing music.

Your Launch Lab Project

By the end of DJ Lab you will have completed a fully organised, performance-ready Rekordbox set — your LLP.

Every track tagged, every transition considered, every section of your set mapped to a feeling and a purpose. You'll also have your DJ name, a bio, and a clear picture of the five venues in Adelaide that suit your style and how to approach them. This isn't just a playlist. It's the foundation of your DJ career.

You will leave with
  • A performance-ready Rekordbox set
  • Every track tagged and mapped
  • Your DJ name and professional bio
  • Five target venues and how to approach them
  • The confidence to actually get behind the decks

Studio Practice Sessions

In addition to your weekly 1:1 mentoring session, DJ Lab students have access to weekly 2-hour practice sessions in the AAI studio. Getting time on club-standard gear between sessions is one of the fastest ways to build the muscle memory and confidence that makes the difference when you're performing live.

Included in DJ Lab
  • Weekly 1:1 mentoring session
  • Weekly 2-hour studio practice session
  • Club-standard Pioneer XDJ-XZ

Your Mentors

DJ Lab sessions are delivered by Chris Low and Caroline Tucker — two of Adelaide's most experienced and actively performing artists.

Chris Low — DJ Lab Mentor at AAI Chris Low DJ Lab Mentor

Chris has spent over a decade living the DJ life — multiple Adelaide residencies, interstate shows, supporting headline touring artists, and a radio residency. What makes Chris exceptional as a mentor is the playful, patient energy that makes even the most intimidating concepts feel approachable. He meets every student exactly where they are and makes the process genuinely fun.

Caroline Tucker DJ Lab Mentor

Caroline is an internationally touring DJ, live performer, and vocalist who has performed at Boiler Room London, Fusion Festival, Rainbow Serpent, and Splendour in the Grass. She has toured internationally with Drum and Bass act V O E and held a live radio show on Fresh 92.7. Is DJ Lab Right For You?

✓ Good Fit

DJ Lab is right for you if you are a complete beginner or early intermediate who wants to learn to DJ properly — with structure, real gear, and a mentor who is still actively performing.

✓ Also a Good Fit

It is also right for you if you have played around with DJing at home but never felt confident enough to take it further, or if you want to understand what you're doing rather than just following tutorials.

✗ Not the Right Fit

It is not the right fit if you are an experienced DJ looking for advanced technique coaching — for that, speak to us about Amp Lab options.

Not sure? The Creative Clarity Call will tell us both everything we need to know.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my own DJ gear?

No — all sessions take place in the AAI studio on our Pioneer XDJ-XZ. If you have gear at home that's great for practice between sessions, but it's not a requirement to start.

What software do you use?

We use Rekordbox for library management and set preparation. It's the industry standard and what you'll find in most professional DJ setups and venues.

Do I need any music knowledge to start?

No prior music knowledge is needed. We teach everything you need — beats, bars, key, structure — in the context of tracks you actually want to play.

Will I actually be ready to perform by the end?

Yes. Your LLP is a performance-ready set and your final session includes a live run-through in the studio. You'll also have your branding, bio, and a plan for approaching venues.

Can I do DJ Lab if I also want to learn production?

Absolutely — and it's a natural combination. Many DJs eventually want to make their own edits and remixes. We'll introduce that idea during the program and point you toward Music Production Lab or relevant Amp Lab modules when the time is right.

What happens after the 8 weeks?

We help you plan your next step — whether that's advanced DJ techniques through Amp Lab, learning production in Music Production Lab, or getting your first gig.
